Inside the lost island of New York: Eerie pictures of the abandoned leper colony just 350 yards from the Bronx
Stairwells strewn with debris and walls crumbling slowly to dust, it is the island that New York forgot for 50 years.
Now, in a series of extraordinarily eerie pictures, the lost world of North Brother – quarantine zone, leper colony and centre for drug addicts – has been brought back to life.
It is hard to believe that these echoing corridors and abandoned halls were home to hundreds of patients – or that a criss-cross of tree-lined avenues were once roads.
But the haunting quality of these pictures makes it easy to imagine that it was a place of indescribable misery, which one inmate compared to the notorious black hole of Calcutta.

A Brisbane woman fleeced Nigerian scam artists by stealing more than $30,000 from their internet car sales racket, a court has been told.
Sarah Jane Cochrane-Ramsey, 23, was employed by the Nigerians as an "agent" in March 2010 but was unaware they were scam artists, the Brisbane District Court heard today.
Her job was to provide an Australian bank account through which they could funnel any payments they received through their dodgy account on a popular car sales website.
Cochrane-Ramsey was to keep eight per cent of all money paid into her account and forward the rest to the Nigerian scammers.
However, the court heard she kept the two payments she received - totalling $33,350 - and spent most of it on herself.

People who constantly reach into a pocket to check a smartphone for bits of information will soon have another option: a pair of Google-made glasses that will be able to stream information to the wearer’s eyeballs in real time.
According to several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named, the glasses will go on sale to the public by the end of the year. These people said they are expected “to cost around the price of current smartphones,” or $250 to $600.
The people familiar with the Google glasses said they would be Android-based, and will include a small screen that will sit a few inches from someone’s eye. They will also have a 3G or 4G data connection and a number of sensors including motion and GPS.
Cool idea. But. Would you trust Google not to record your every move and now, what you look at? Fuck no.

On March 1st, Google will implement its new, unified privacy policy, which will affect data Google has collected on you prior to March 1st as well as data it collects on you in the future. Until now, your Google Web History (your Google searches and sites visited) was cordoned off from Google's other products. This protection was especially important because search data can reveal particularly sensitive information about you, including facts about your location, interests, age, sexual orientation, religion, health concerns, and more. If you want to keep Google from combining your Web History with the data they have gathered about you in their other products, such as YouTube or Google Plus, you may want to remove all items from your Web History and stop your Web History from being recorded in the future.

Volt owner John McDole has proven him wrong, using a collection of cheap, off-the-hardware-store-shelf items to build a three-gun rack that snugly hugs the back of the hybrid’s rear seat.

Scientologists have asked the Federal Government for an exemption to the Fair Work Act so they do not have to pay workers the minimum wage.
In a submission to the Fair Work review, public affairs director Reverend Mary Anderson said the Church of Scientology, which believes Earth was founded 75 million years ago by an alien tyrant called Xenu, should be exempt from workplace law because it was a legitimate religion.
"There is nothing wrong with the concept 'a fair day's pay for a fair day's work' but it is misdirected when applied to religious volunteers whose focus is not on pay but on service to a spiritual cause," Ms Anderson wrote.

A man has been arrested after he stayed in a motel room with his girlfriend's corpse for two days.
Rather than alerting authorities when Nancy Johnston died, Derek Tanke, 47, allegedly stole her debit card to buy vodka and pay for two more days in the Joliet, Illinois motel.
He called 911 minutes before he was due to check out and when police arrived, they noted 'a significant odour of decomposition'.
Tanke, who has been arrested on six occasions for beating Johnston, admitted to punching her several times in the face days before her death.

The plant owes its miraculous resurrection to a team of scientists led by David Gilichinsky, and an enterprising ground squirrel. Back in the Upper Pleistocene, the squirrel buried the plant’s fruit in the banks of the Kolyma River. They froze.
Over millennia, the squirrel’s burrow fossilized and was buried under increasing layers of ice. The plants within were kept at a nippy -7 degrees Celsius, surrounded by permanently frozen soil and the petrifying bones of mammoths and woolly rhinos. They never thawed. They weren’t disturbed. By the time they were found and defrosted by scientists, they had been buried to a depth of 38 metros, and frozen for around 31,800 years…
Unfortunately the plant is growing at a rate of 2 meters per day and is consuming the flesh of any being it touches. Oh science.

In a small clean room tucked into the back of San Diego–based startup Organovo, Chirag Khatiwala is building a thin layer of human skeletal muscle. He inserts a cartridge of specially prepared muscle cells into a 3-D printer, which then deposits them in uniform, closely spaced lines in a petri dish. This arrangement allows the cells to grow and interact until they form working muscle tissue that is nearly indistinguishable from something removed from a human subject.

Online auction site eBay has withdrawn the Snowtown Bank from sale less than 24 hours after real estate agent Nigel Christie listed it.
In emails and conversations with the Hales Real Estate director, eBay said the item was removed because the site deemed it "inappropriate or insensitive to victims of disasters or tragedies".
But Mr Christie said the bank and house were a legitimate sale and questioned why the property was removed when books about the serial killings and DVDs of the film Snowtown, which was partly filmed in the bank, were allowed to remain.

Providing back-up batteries for 11 million phone subscribers to the National Broadband Network will cost taxpayers up to $150 million a year.
Back-up battery units will be made mandatory on the NBN after industry concerns over consumers' ability to place emergency calls during a power outage.
Once the NBN is fully operational, about 2 million to 4 million back-up batteries are expected to be disposed of annually.
The McKinsey-KPMG implementation study into the NBN said it would cost an "additional $90m to $150m each year" to give all phone service users the emergency back-up batteries.

The Act provides for divorce and the resolution of disputes arising from the breakdown of a marriage and relationships, including disputes over the division of property and parental responsibility for children.
